Those job seekers who have been affected by the global economic recession are all over the internet looking for directions and advice from people trying to help. To be successful we must critically examine the issue of the almighty cover letter.
The first thing your potential employer will ever read is your cover letter, more so in today’s technology – dominated culture in which most applications are done through the internet.
Your cover letter is therefore typically inserted into the body of your mail in response to job listing. Your letter is the only chance you have to convince your potential employer to give your resume the attention that you feel it deserves.
Therefore, the following are the main points to remember when preparing your resume:
1. For your cover letter to grab your employer’s attention, you should not simply repeat the information on your resume.
2. Your letter must fit the company you are contacting and make sure you include the exact position for which you are applying.
3. If a name is mentioned specifically in the job listing, make sure you include the name in the subject line of the mail, such as “for the attention of this person” and address the letter directly to him or her.
4. The opportunity you have to tell the company exactly what can do for them is through your cover letter. Highlight your skills, experience, education that make you the best qualified person for the job. This is the best time to show that you have tailored your cover letter to this very company. Do some research and find out a bit about what the company does and preferences to know if your skill will be beneficial to both you and the company
5. Also the perfect time to briefly explain a scenario in which you exemplify some trait the company may be looking for is through the letter. This element can only be addressed in your cover letter
6. Keep your letter short, not more than a page and type it in Microsoft word single spaced
7. Proof read your letter thoroughly. If your letter is full of grammatical/spelling error or typo, you will look hurried, sloppy or inattentive to details. Bear in mind that the first sentence of each paragraph in a cover letter is not supposed to be indented.
8. Finally, thank them for their time at the close of your letter and an invitation to contact you.
