The South Africa 2010 World Cup has come and gone but one cannot forget the adverse effect it left on Nigerian football. The Super eagles could not go beyond the group stage, despite the facilities that were put in place to ensure their success. Their humiliating defeat shook the whole nation and the presidency, having spent fortune on the tournament. The president in return for the humiliation stung the Nigeria football Federation by imposing a ban on international football activities. After much pleading, consultation and intervention by stake holders, the ban was lifted.
With the hire of a foreign coach, people thought the super eagles would perform excellently, but they proved otherwise. Their performance, right from the beginning, was nothing to write home about.
However, with the announcement of the Africa Women Championship in Sought Africa, it reminded the nation of the world cup. Another event was to take place again in the same country and the nation was prepared to redeem its image.
The Super falcons prepared for the tournament just as their male counterpart (Super eagles) did for the world cup. Each of their matches yielded excellent and superb result as few people really expected. They went, they saw and they conquered. They brought home the trophy to the shame of their male counterpart who went, saw and failed.
The impressive and heroic performance of the falcons, proved the assertion that what a man can do, a woman can do better. The Super eagles and the Super falcons both went to South Africa for different tournament but the female team proved themselves worthy of the crown. It doesn’t matter whether one went for a world cup and the other for an African cup because it’s been a long time since the Super eagles won the Africa cup of nation.
Since the NFF has been overhauled and a new coach for the Super eagles has emerged, in the person of Samson Siasia, we hope that the nation’s senior team will take a new dimension.
