Nuhu Ribadu declares zero tolerance for corruption at the camp meeting held in Nigeria's capital city, Abuja. The meeting which came to an end today was quite interesting and participants from all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria were quite impressed with the pedigree and impeccable personality of the highly charismatic former anti-corruption czar.
Nuhu Ribadu used the opportunity to present his programmes which encompasses virtually all aspects of life with emphasis on ensuring immediate implementation of plans that would ameliorate the sufferings of the average Nigerian who has borne the consequences of misrule since independence.
He believes, and urged all Nigerians to believe also, that it is possible to bring the Nigeria of our dream to fruition. He believes leaders should listen to the yearnings of the people and should match words with the right actions instead of making empty promises.
He told the gathering that he would provide focused leadership that would address the appalling security situation as well as the Niger-Delta issue. He also said he would, amongst other things ensure that Nigerians have access to quality education at all levels, quality healthcare, unfettered access to justice and better enforcement of the people's rights as well as the rule of law. In addition to the foregoing, he said that he would further ensure that Nigerians get true dividends of democracy in the area of infrastructure development, better management of the petroleum sector to ensure that Nigerians get value for their money, revamping of the economy and massive investments to restore our agricultural prowess.
Nuhu Ribadu stated that his government would be highly responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the people. He further said a Ribadu Presidency would mark a new dawn for Nigeria where the change we so desire and that seemed to elude us since independence would be attainable. He said he would ensure total accountability at all levels of government.
On the issue of his being an Obasanjo 'boy', Ribadu said that all of the candidates had at one time or the other worked with Obasanjo including Atiku Abubakar, Ibrahim Babangida, Gusau and a host of others. The question is, why were these guys not called Obasanjo 'boys'? He said his mission was to provide purposeful leadership for Nigerians based on the dictates of the constitution and a clear conscience.
On the issue of his being used to prosecute the anti-corruption war selectively against Obasanjo's perceived enemies, Ribadu stated clearly that he had not embarked on any such venture. He dared anyone to come forward and he would tell the world what the person did. He also said that there were instances when there were attempts to bribe him with huge amounts of money in US Dollars. But, he instead prosecuted those persons and those monies are deposited at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
It would be recalled that at the inception of his tenure at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Nuhu Ribadu had scored huge successes bringing 'internet rats' and advanced fee fraud (419) kingpins to book. Then the whole world including politicians applauded him. But, when he turned his attention to ignoble and corrupt politicians who loot the treasury with reckless abandon, they cried out alleging persecution from then President Obasanjo.Unfortunat
ely, the press ran with false stories as some of them were owned by corrupt politicians as well as friends of corrupt politicians (the brown envelope effect).
We are also living witnesses to how the then Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, irresponsible Michael Aaondoaka played the villain, effectively hamstringing the anti-corruption war and in connivance with the higher hierarchy of the police force tried to destroy this young man who served his fatherland meritoriously and without fear.
We are all also living witnesses to how he was vindicated and found innocent.
