Scores were feared dead yesterday when members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect struck in Bauchi and Borno states. They were said to have broken into the Bauchi Prisons and freed their members awaiting trial.

But Bauchi State Police Commissioner Danlami Yar’Adua, who confirmed the incident, said they made an attempt to break in. His words: "There was an attempt by suspected persons to break into the Bauchi Prisons and they were said to be armed. We have mobilised policemen to the prison to ensure that the situation did not get out of hand."

They burnt vehicles parked in front of the prisons.
