It is no longer news that HITV couldn't meet the requirements of the English Premiership League broadcast rights bid which they won and that Multichoice (DSTV) has the rights because they stump up the required amount given their deep pocket and alleged favourable disposition of South African banks. What is uncomfortable is that Multichoice has broadcast rights of all major European football leagues in Africa. This is unfair to our economy considering that we contribute a significant portion of their (Multichoice) annual turnover. Moreover as a football crazy nation we shall be subjected to the whims and caprices of this single service provider.
I think there should be a deliberate policy by the Government to encourage indigenous enterprises to thrive in any industry they choose to operate otherwise we (in this case, subscribers) should take our destiny in our hands by modulating this industry given our number and critical role we play in sub-Saharan Africa. This is not the time to be docile. We must make our impact felt. We must stand up and resist humongous capital flight.
There is no where people pay up to $50 per month to watch pay TV let alone over $60 we pay in this country. This subscription is too high. I think we need to do something about it and very fast too. Enough of this nonchalant attitude we have in this country.
Issues to ponder.........do you think the subscription is appropriate........? if no.....can we mobilize and force Multichoice to reduce the subscription by refusing to renew our subscription......
